Carleton University's Faculty of Engineering and Design, as one of the nation's leading institutions in the study and research of engineering and design disciplines, recognizes the close relationship between engineers and the communities they serve. Engineering studies and research at Carleton address the pressing needs of society through program offerings in several disciplines that create an "anything but textbook" learning experience. New programs recently introduced include undergraduate and graduate degree offerings in the fields of sustainable and renewable energy and building conservation and sustainability; these disciplines prepares students interested in working in the expanding alternative energy sector in wind, solar, geothermal heat, biofuels or smart grid technology and in studying how the built environment and services are able to comply with the principles of economic, social and ecological sustainability.
Our facilities are world class. In addition to our full complement of teaching and research laboratories, we have specialized, industry-sponsored labs that you will only find at Carleton including:

• Mitel VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) Lab
• Nortel Advanced Communications Software Engineering Research and Training Lab
• Pratt & Whitney High Speed Wind Tunnel
• Texas Instruments ELITE DSP (Digital Signal Processing) Lab.
Carleton University has recently opened the new, 'smart' six-storey, 100,000 square foot, Canal Building to house engineering programs in biomedical, energy, architectural and conservation and aerospace. This building will not only provide much needed hands on learning and research space for engineering students but is also a teaching tool itself for engineering students as it incorporates features such as green roofs, photovoltaic solar energy systems and occupancy controlled lighting, etc. We are proud of the fact that the building has received a five out of five Green Globes rating – a revolutionary building environmental design and management tool which delivers an online assessment protocol, rating system and guidance for green building design, operation and management.

Women in Engineering
One of the Faculty's initiatives is to support women in engineering on campus and in industry. With a growing number of female students, we sponsor and partner with a number of faculty initiatives that support and encourage female engineers including IEEE Women in Engineering http://ieee.carleton.ca/wie/; and Women in Science and Engineering http://people.scs.carleton.ca/~wise/ . We are especially proud to participate in Go ENG Girl! http://www2.carleton.ca/engineering-design/about-the-faculty/outreach-in... Our faculty supports participation of our female students in attending conferences, workshops and many outreach activities that provide female engineering students the opportunity to network and learn from professional female engineers and other industry partners.
