Western Engineering is proud to offer students a huge array of opportunities, including: a Common First Year; 9 strong design-based core engineering programs; Dual Degrees; Accelerated Master’s Program; Co-op and Internships; leadership opportunities; and more. We refer to our huge array of opportunities as Western Engineering Plus http://www.eng.uwo.ca/undergraduate/prospective/
Western Engineering has a strong and active Women in Engineering student group. Each year, the student-run group works to empower and encourage current and prospective female students in the field of engineering. A typical calendar year for the group includes a voluntary Big Sister – Little Sister Mentorship Program where upper-year students are paired with first-year students during Orientation Week. The idea is to make first-year students more comfortable at university by having a Big Sister respond to any questions or concerns. A Big Sister may provide support and act as a mentor and reference point. This program is completely voluntary both for the first-year students and the upper-year students. Women in Engineering also plans a number of social events and participates in outreach activities such as Go ENG Girl, Discovery Western Girls Club, and more. Professional Development opportunities are also made available throughout the year. http://www.eng.uwo.ca/wie/
At Western Engineering we have some amazing female all-stars. Here is some more information about a few of them.
Professor Cynthia Dunning is an Assistant Professor and Canada Research Chair in Orthopaedic Biomechanics in Western’s Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. In addition to researching better ways to correct joint instability after an injury, Professor Dunning is also an advocate for recruiting more females into the engineering profession. Professor Dunning has co-chaired Western Engineering’s Go ENG Girl program since it’s inauguration and she is the faculty advisor for the student group, Women in Engineering. Catherine Karakatsanis (BESc '83 MESc '91) is the Executive Vice President, Buildings, Technology & Energy at Morrison Hershfield Group Inc., a consulting engineering and management firm with 12 offices across North America and over 700 employees. In Spring 2009, Catherine was installed as PEO President. Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) is the licensing body for professional engineers in the province. Catherine is the 90th President of the organization. After graduating with bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering from The University of Western Ontario, Catherine was a research assistant at the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory. She joined Morrison Hershfield in 1989 and has since had a diversified career with extensive engineering and management experience. Catherine continuous gives back to the Western community as a huge supporter of women in engineering. She delivered the keynote talk at the National Conference of Women in Engineering, held at Western in 2008, and she most recently spoke at the 2010 Lynda Shaw Memorial Distinguished Lecture Series about the need for the engineering profession to address the gender stereotypes that prevent young women from studying in male-dominated fields.
Professor Clare Robinson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Research Director at Western's Geotechincal Research Centre. Professor Robinson's research is focused on groundwater-surface water interactions in coastal environments; fate and transport of groundwater pollutants; water quality, supply and treatment in developing countries; and groundwater and geochemical modeling. She is also the faculty advisor for the Civil and Environmental Engineering International Development Program. Read more about this exciting program here: http://www.eng.uwo.ca/weaid/
