It was as a general arts undergraduate
student that Heidi Manicke first discovered
engineering and her interest was piqued. Along
with completing her arts degree, she also began
upgrading her high school credits by correspon-
dence, and completed the math and science
requirements for engineering.
Today she is a geological engineering student
at the University of British Columbia. A dedicated
volunteer in her community, Heidi helps to
promote gender equality within the profession of
engineering by organizing events with her school
sorority. She also mentors first year female
engineering students and enjoys the balance of
working in the field, lab and office.
A certified instructor for indoor rock climbing,
Heidi has worked as an assistant coach with the
Junior Climbing Program at a rock climbing gym
in Vancouver, and is also a competitive cyclist.

apprécie le travail équilibré sur le terrain, en labora-
toire et dans un bureau.
Entraîneuse certifiée en escalade intérieure,
Heidi a travaillé comme entraîneuse adjointe avec le
Junior Climbing Program,
un centre d
escalade à
Vancouver. Elle est aussi cycliste de compétition.
It was a Grade 12 high school geography
course that first sparked HilaryWong
s interest in
the mining industry. She enjoyed exploring
society
s impact on the environment, and learn-
ing about different climates and their associated
challenges.
Today, Hilary is in her second year of applied
sciences at the University of British Columbia,
specializing in geological engineering. “I want to
put a good name on mining – to help the world
reach its necessary resources in the most sustain-
able way possible,” she says. Hilary has served on
the UBC Engineering Ambassador team to
promote the values of engineering to high school
students, and in her spare time she volunteers as
a familiarization pilot with the Royal Canadian Air
Cadets.
Her leadership and commitment to helping
others is also reflected in her volunteer work for
Free the Children and at her local martial arts
studio.

Cadets de l
Aviation royale du Canada.
Son leadership et son engagement envers les
autres sont bien visibles dans son implication
bénévole avec le programme Enfants d
entraide
(
Free the Children
) et à son studio communautaire
d
arts martiaux.
