Andrea Palmer is a third year mechanical
engineering student at the University of British
Columbia, with a speciality in mechatronics.
Andrea is passionate about engineering and
believes:“Engineering encourages questions, and
helps you understand how to ask the
right
questions, which not only makes you become a
better engineer but creates a chain reaction of
further learning.”
She has helped to build a support network
and community for female engineering students
at UBC as the Student Program Coordinator for
Women in Engineering. In this role, she organized
a“Go Eng Girl!”conference for female high school
students, and an Engineering Mentoring and
Networking event.
Her outstanding leadership was recently
recognized when she was awarded the
Mechanical Engineering Student Leadership
Award for her volunteer work.
In spare time, Andrea keeps active by
training in mixed martial arts and teaching
swimming lessons.

Andrea a aidé àbâtir un réseaude soutienet une
communauté pour les étudiantes en génie à UBC
dans son rôle de coordonnatrice duprogramme des
étudiantes en génie . Dans le cadre de ses fonctions,
elle a organisé la conférence « Go Eng Girl! » pour les
étudiantes du secondaire en plus d
un événement
dementorat et de réseautage en génie.
On a récemment reconnu son exceptionnel
leadership en lui remettant un prix étudiant de
leadership en génie mécanique pour son impli-
cation bénévole.
Dans ses temps libres, Andrea demeure active
en pratiquant des arts martiaux mixtes et en
enseignant la natation.

After completing her undergraduate and
master
s degrees in biochemistry, Crystal Sabel
was compelled to pursue a career in engineering
after watching coverage of the Gulf oil spill. She
is now a second year chemical engineering
student at Laurentian University, specializing in
environmental sustainability.
“Every day, as a student of engineering, I have
the opportunity to dig deeper. I am learning
about the technological solutions which will
reduce our impact on the Earth
s environment,”
she says. She has had the opportunity to work at
a world-class facility for environmental research,
and has worked on projects in occupational
health which have taken her to visit several
Northern Ontario mine sites.
As a math and science tutor, she strives to
help her students appreciate the science that
makes the world work, and has been involved in
many science outreach programs in her
community. An avid competitive cyclist, she
spends her time coaching and volunteering with
her local cycling clubs and promoting healthy
living through volunteering with her local YMCA.
Après avoir obtenu son baccalauréat et sa
maîtrise en biochimie, Crystal Sabel a vu la
couverture médiatique du déversement de pétrole
dans le Golfe et s
est sentie attirée par une carrière
en génie. Elle est actuellement étudiante en
deuxième année de génie chimique à
Laurentian
University
et se spécialise en durabilité
environnementale.

technologiques qui réduiront notre impact sur
l
environnementdelaTerre,»ditSabelquiaputravailler
dansdeslaboratoiresdeclassemondialeenrecherches
environnementales. De plus, elle a aussi participé à
quelques projets en santé au travail qui l
ont menée à
divers sitesminiersdunordde l
Ontario.
À titre de tutrice en mathématiques et en
sciences, Sabel aide ses élèves à apprécier la science
qui fait véritablement fonctionner notremonde. Elle
a d
ailleurs fait partie de plusieurs programmes
communautaires de sensibilisation aux sciences.
Cycliste de compétition, elle est entraîneuse et
bénévole à son club régional de cyclisme et
encourage un sain mode de vie en participant
bénévolement aux activités de son
YMCA
local.
