WWW.CEMF.CASarah Douglas is a third year undergraduate
student specializing in electrical engineering at
the University of Victoria where she is a varsity
athlete and starting player for the university soc-
cer team. She has earned many sports awards for
her soccer skills and she is CPR, First Aid, and av-
alanche rescue qualified. She solved an ultra-
sound electromagnetic problem for the area
Health Authority by incorporating network isola-
tors to reduce noise and she designed a seat that
improves the health of office workers by alerting
those who have been sitting for an hour. She has
been responsible for new solutions in the medical
imaging department and neonatal units at Van-
couver Island hospitals as a clinical engineering
co-op student. She helped to create an inclusive
community and support program for young
adults. Sarah balances her university schedule
with many extra-curricular activities including
coaching children in soccer and caring for animals
at a local veterinarian hospital.
SarahDouglas est étudiante en troisième année
au baccalauréat en génie électrique à l'University of
Victoria où elle est joueuse partante pour l'équipe
de soccer universitaire. Au fil du temps, elle reçoit
de nombreux prix pour ses compétences sportives
et elle est formée en RCR et en Premiers soins et est
secouriste en cas d'avalanches. En incorporant un
réseau d'isolants pour réduire le bruit, elle a résolu
un problème d'échographie électromagnétique
pour les autorités locales de santé. En plus, elle a
conçuun siège qui améliore la santé des travailleurs
de bureau en sonnant une alarme après une heure
de temps assis. Lors de son stage clinique en génie,
elle conçoit de nouvelles solutions dans le départe-
ment de l'imagerie médicale et à l'unité néonatale
au sein des hôpitaux de l'île de Vancouver. Sarah a
aussi aidé à créer un programme communautaire
inclusif de soutien pour les jeunes adultes. Elle
équilibre son travail universitaire en intégrant à son
horairede nombreuses activités parascolaires. Ainsi,
elle est entraîneuse de soccer pour enfants et ap-
porte son aide aux animaux d'une clinique vétéri-
naire locale.
Aliya Lakhani is in her fourth year of chemical bio-
medical engineering at the University of Alberta. She
works as an Undergrad Research Student at the Cana-
dian Center for Welding and Joining, where she re-
searches the use of rapid prototyping in the treatment
ofpatientswithcongenitalheartdisease.Herworkwith
EngineersWithout Borders included improving an in-
ternship program in a rural Ghana Agricultural college.
She is the recipient of the Lee Global Education Award
for International Development. For twoyears, Aliyavol-
unteered at Discover E in Edmonton where she ran a
project-basedprogramtointroducegirlstoengineering,
and to encourage femaleparticipation in science, tech-
nology development, and engineering. She works as a
Science Zone Activities Leader at Strathcona County
Recreation, Parks, andCulture, anddelivers sciencepre-
sentationstoelementarystudentsthroughtheEdmon-
ton Science Outreach Network. Aliya has developed
take-home science projects for the APEGA Elementary
ScienceNight project. She is aqualifiedBlackBelt inTae
KwonDo,fullybilingualandspeaksGujarati.
Aliya Lakhani est étudiante en chimie biomédi-
caleàl'UniversityofAlberta. Elletravaillecommeétu-
diante à la recherche au premier cycle au Canadian
Center forWelding and Joining où elle étudie les util-
isationsduprototypagerapidepourletraitementdes
patientsatteintsdecardiopathiecongénitale.AvecIn-
génieurs sans frontières, elle participe à un pro-
grammed'internatauGhanaAgriculturalCollege. Elle
est lauréate du Lee Global Education Award pour le
développement international. Pendant deux ans,
Aliya donne son temps à Discover E, à Edmonton, où
elle gère un programde projets dont lemandat était
d'initierlesfillesaugénieetd'encouragerlaparticipa-
tion féminine aux sciences, au développement des
technologiesetaugénie. ÀStrathconaCountyRecre-
ation, Parks and Culture, elle est responsable des ac-
tivités du Science Zone. En plus, elle anime des
présentations pour les élèves du primaire avec le Ed-
montonScienceOutreachNetwork. Aliyaaconçudes
trousses de projets de sciences pour la maison pour
le APEGA Elementary Science Night Project. Elle dé-
tient une ceinture noire enTae KwonDo, est bilingue
et parle aussi le gujarati.
